Text Box: The modern form of reflexology has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and is depicted in drawings from ancient Egypt dating from 2330 BC.  Traditional modern medical techniques have also played a part in progressing reflexology.   The eminent physicians, Sir Henry Head and Sir Charles Sherrington made important discoveries about how the nervous system coordinates the functions of the body, and how it could be manipulated through various points under the skin. It was an American physiotherapist, Eunice Ingham, who developed the modern practice of reflexology in the 1930’s and helped introduce the therapy to a wider audience. Reflexology is now practised in the NHS and private health care systems as a complement to conventional treatment for many disorders.

Text Box: Reflexology is a holistic technique which aims to treat the person as an individual.
Many people mistake reflexology to be a basic relaxing foot massage, but it is far more than this. Reflexology is the technique of applying firm pressure to precise reflex points on the feet.
This technique is based on the premise that these reflex points correspond with many different parts of the anatomy via the vast and complicated nervous system that coordinates the human body and its many functions. In fact, there are 7000 nerve endings on each foot which enable trained therapists to access all systems of the body.

The human body is a truly magnificent “machine” which operates constantly on a number of levels to keep us alive and functioning effectively.  True health is a state where all the body’s many functions are working properly, both individually and together.
